July 2019 Newsletter

Dear Friend,

Our guests have very few options to stay cool during the midday heat.

Summer is here – a time when we all need ways to cool off, especially when the temperature climbs to 110 or even 115 degrees. That kind of heat takes a toll on everyone. Pools and water parks are packed with people trying to beat the heat, but most of us go straight for an air-conditioned space to get real relief.

The guests we serve are no different as they seek refuge from the blazing sun after particularly long stretches of time outside, except that they don’t have a climate-controlled place to rest. Susan, a guest of Loaves & Fishes for several years, spends much of her summer time seeking out shade or a cool indoor place where she won’t be asked to leave. “The sun and heat are really intense,” she told me. “You feel it on your skin, and in your head, too. People get frustrated.”

The sun takes both a physical and mental toll on our guests, and it is easy to understand why. Desperate to escape the heat but with limited options, the frustration or depression our guests face leaves them feeling even more trapped by their experience with homelessness.

Umbrellas, shaded gazebos, cold water, and ice are just a few ways we give our guests relief from the elements.

At Loaves & Fishes we take many steps to address this crucial need. Our Library in the Delany Center is regularly filled with guests who need a quiet, cool place to escape the elements. Guests will also head to the Wash House (for men) or Maryhouse (for women and children) to grab a refreshing shower. Friendship Park turns on water misters in their gazebos, so guests can get some shade and momentary relief. We regularly distribute ice and cold water (made possible through our annual Water Drive!) to ensure that our guests stay hydrated through the worst of the heat.

Your support makes all of this vital help for our guests possible. As we brace the inevitable heat waves ahead, they desperately need your help.

Please make a donation today to help our guests – men, women, and children experiencing homelessness – receive critical survival services and relief from intense heat so that they may, one day, find their way from a situation of homelessness to a home of their own.

Thank you for your support, and for making such a profound difference in the lives of others in need.

Gratefully and sincerely,

Noel Kammermann
Executive Director
